The one-minute version

Don’t jump straight into multiplayer for your first match. Play the single-player story first and get comfortable with Michael’s stalking and executions. Then move into Civilian matches and learn searching, calling the police and escaping.

The reason is simple. A multiplayer match asks you to handle the map, your team and Michael at the same time. Learning all three at once is too much.

What each side is actually trying to do

A match is one against four. One player is Michael Myers, also called The Shape. Up to four players are Haddonfield residents, called Heroes or Civilians.

Michael stalks, uses darkness and abilities to close in, then builds Bloodthirst through executions. Civilians pick up items, help residents, call the police and look for a way out. Both sides share the same map but are solving completely different problems.

Alongside multiplayer there’s a single-player story and private matches against AI. The Steam page lists Single-player, Online PvP, Online Co-op and Steam Achievements.

The order to play your first matches in

  1. Finish the early part of the story. Watch how stalking, Killer Sense and Shape Jump change your approach routes.
  2. As a Civilian, scan your surroundings at the start: what you can pick up, which resident needs help, where the phone is. Then split jobs with your team.
  3. As Michael, practise watching from cover and cutting phone lines. Save the ability chains for later.
  4. Once normal escapes feel familiar, try police pressure, private AI matches and longer-term goals.
  5. Leave trophies, achievements and Perk Points for phase two. Don’t let a cumulative target wreck your first matches.

What Patch 1.0.2 changed before your first match

The game launched on 2026-09-08. The current version is Patch 1.0.2. Three changes will directly affect how your first matches feel.

Grab-escape items are rarer. Pocket Knives, Icepicks and similar items spawn less often across every map. As a Civilian, don’t assume you can break free just because you got grabbed, and don’t waste your starting item.

Michael is tougher early. The same patch raised Michael’s base damage resistance and the damage resistance of Bloodthirst tiers 1 and 2. Trading hits head-on is worse than it was at launch. Move to evasion and teamwork instead.

Melee is still changing. The developers plan to keep adjusting melee damage, Civilian stagger states and combo speed, and to make Michael harder to stagger. Those are plans, not shipped changes. What you learn now will shift again.

A few crashes are still open

On 2026-09-17 the developers named three crash scenarios still under investigation: when Loomis reinforcements enter the match, at the end of single-player chapters (the Prologue and Chapter 3 results screens), and across multiple scenarios on Xbox Series X|S.

Don’t reinstall the moment you crash. Check Crashing and stuck? first to see whether it’s a known issue.

The full patch timeline is in Update log and known issues.

Limits and sources

The developers have not published a full control map, every item spawn or balance values. This page only gives a learning order; it doesn’t fill in data on their behalf.
